An unpredictable bushfire is threatening lives and homes near fishing towns in Western Australia.

An emergency warning has been issued for the southern parts of Leeman and the northern parts of Green Head in the Shire of Coorow in the state's mid-west.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services alert said on Monday.

"There is a threat to lives and homes."

The fire is moving fast in a north-easterly direction and Indian Ocean Drive is closed.

It is controlled but not contained.

A watch and act alert has been issued for the Leeman townsite.

Firefighters are battling the blaze with the help of water bombers.

The Shire of Coorow is about 300km north of Perth and has a population of about 1050.
