University Of Florida Proceeds With Graduation Amid Campus Protests

College students protest on University of Michigan campus

As universities navigate the complexities of holding commencement ceremonies amidst escalating campus protests related to Israel's conflict with Gaza, the University of Florida is moving forward with its graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday.

In a letter addressed to the State University System of Florida, Chancellor Ray Rodrigues emphasized that the upcoming university-wide commencement is not the appropriate platform for political demonstrations.

Recent protests on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, have resulted in the arrest of approximately nine individuals, contributing to a broader trend of campus-related arrests nationwide.

Rodrigues underscored that no commencement event should be disrupted or altered significantly due to disruptive protests, highlighting the importance of maintaining the integrity of such ceremonies.

Amidst these challenges, various colleges are reevaluating their approaches to hosting graduation ceremonies. The University of Southern California has already opted to cancel its primary commencement for the graduating class of 2024, while Columbia University has requested the presence of New York police on campus until at least May 17, following its commencement activities.

Contrary to these adjustments, Rodrigues confirmed that Florida universities, including the University of Florida, will proceed with their planned ceremonies. He authorized necessary measures to ensure the safety of all attendees and emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards protests, discrimination, or harassment during commencement events.

At the University of Florida's ceremony, UF alumnus Carlton Ward Jr., a renowned conservation photographer recognized for his work with the Florida panther and advocacy for the Florida Wildlife Corridor, is set to deliver a keynote address to graduates. The university-wide commencement is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET tomorrow at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
