Two dead in Memphis shooting after 'gunfire at street party'

At least two people are dead and six others injured in a shooting at a street party in Memphis, US police have said.

Memphis police said there were two separate gunmen who fired shots at the party on Saturday.

One of the injured is in a critical condition at the ‘block party’ attended by up to 300 revellers.

The police department in Memphis, Tennessee, initially said there were 16 victims including the two men who were killed, but later revised the number, saying it was an "error" likely caused by "several victims being reported multiple times".

In an updated statement it said: "During the follow-up investigation, we learned that there were 8 total victims, with two of those being deceased on the scene.

One of the injured remains in critical condition, while one has been released, police said.

Police added: "This was a block party that was occurring without a permit. The block party had about 200-300 people in attendance.”

At least two suspects are being sought Memphis Police interim chief Cerelyn Davis told CBS News.

He said: "We believe there are at least two individuals that fired weapons during this incident.”
