TV tonight: Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant’s divisive political satire

The Regime

9pm, Sky Atlantic

Kate Winslet in a big HBO drama is quite the event in TV land – but Winslet in a stinker makes for something even more major. This divisive political satire could well be exactly that. Either way, you’re still going to want to watch the Oscar-winner as pursed-lipped, paranoid hypochondriac Elena Vernham, who is the chancellor of a central European republic. As her status is threatened, the only person she trusts is an enigmatic ex-soldier Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), whose official job is to check that the humidity levels around her are just right at all times. It seems to be trying to strike the same zany tone as The Great, with the addition of guest star Hugh Grant in future episodes. Hollie Richardson

Defiance: Fighting the Far Right

9pm, Channel 4

From Riz Ahmed’s production company, this striking three-part documentary – shown throughout the week – does a compelling job of telling the personal and political stories behind Britain’s Asian community as it faced violence and murder between 1976 and 1981. It starts with the murder of Altab Ali, which shocked the Brick Lane Bengali community. HR

Meet the Roman Emperor With Mary Beard

9pm, BBC Two

Emperor Domitian was “touchy about his baldness”. Kissing was banned from the Roman court to stop spreading herpes. Every day really is a learning day with classicist Mary Beard, who also demonstrates how a Roman would wipe themselves with a sponge after using the lav. This thrilling hour is all about helping show us exactly what an emperor’s life was like. HR

The Cuckoo

9pm, Channel 5

It’s a mere 90 seconds before the first clunky bit of dialogue appears in this creepy drama about a family who take in a chaos-sowing lodger. How could they have known that someone who turns up with £3,000 in cash might turn out to be not all they claim, eh? Brace for non-stop dramatic music and domestic arguments. Alexi Duggins

Curb Your Enthusiasm

9pm, Sky Comedy

The last ever episode sees Larry return to Atlanta to face justice, which will go smoothly so long as he does nothing to publicly besmirch his own reputation on the eve of the trial. Poignantly, there’s also a storyline for Curb stalwart Richard Lewis, who died in February. Jack Seale

Meet the Richardsons

9pm, Dave

The likable mock-documentary returns. While Jon is ordered by UKTV to find a comedy A-lister for the show, Lucy’s upswing in work on the back of her Bafta nomination is tempered by anxiety about approaching 40 – and an unsympathetic agent. “Menopause is the next ADHD. I can make you the face of hot flushes.” Ali Catterall
