Transportation Secretary Buttigieg To Address Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is set to visit Baltimore today, as confirmed by a staff member from the agency. This visit comes in the wake of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a critical transportation artery in the region.

Buttigieg recently engaged in discussions with Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts. In a statement, Buttigieg emphasized the ongoing rescue operations and urged drivers in the Baltimore area to adhere to guidance provided by local responders regarding detours and alternate routes.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld, in a news briefing on Tuesday morning, highlighted the need for alternative transportation solutions for the approximately 35,000 daily commuters affected by the bridge closure. Wiedefeld mentioned that authorities are actively working to redirect traffic to two major tunnels in the area - the harbor tunnel and the Fort McHenry Tunnel - to help alleviate congestion and ensure continued mobility for residents and commuters.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has underscored the importance of infrastructure maintenance and safety measures, prompting swift action from government officials and transportation authorities to address the immediate impact on the local community. As recovery efforts continue, residents are advised to stay informed about traffic updates and follow official instructions to navigate around the affected area.
