ALABAMA - Liga MX and Mexican government authorities investigate the scenes of a traffic accident outside of Liga MX's Santos Laguna stadium, in Torreón, Coahuila. The incident happened about two hours after Santos' game against Monterrey, in a nearby highway known as "La Concha."

According to reports, the driver of a pickup truck that transported soccer fans and some musical instruments used by supporter groups lost control of the vehicle and collided with a taxi cab and ran over some Monterrey fans, about less than three miles away from Estadio Corona.

Coahuila's prosecutor's office revealed that the only deceased was a woman, and four other people remain in critical condition after the pickup truck ran over a small group of Monterrey fans at around 11:30 PM the night of Jan. 21, 2024.

With the investigation still ongoing, authorities are trying to figure out how this tragic event happened. Some reports say that Santos Laguna fans were seen throwing rocks and harassing Monterrey fans that had traveled to Torreón, before the gray truck crashed against them and took the life of a middle-aged woman.

According to accounts from the Mexican newspaper Récord, two kinesiologists from Santos Laguna were reportedly among the first responders at the scene of the accident. They provided immediate assistance to the victims and called for additional help.

Just a few minutes after the traffic accident, Torreón's transit authorities had reported on X that they had a clean operation during the soccer match.

This is just another episode of violence in Liga MX's stadiums. Just a couple of years ago, the Mexican league experienced one of its darkest days as a massive riot took place during an Atlas-Querétaro match that left dozens of people injured in critical condition. Mexican authorities denied claims that 17 people had died during the riot, while Atlas fans still contradict officials arguing that some of their family members are still missing.
