The Proclaimers to open Mouth of the Tyne Festival in July with tickets on sale soon

Scottish duo The Proclaimers are gonna be making a trip to the North East this July to kick off a popular summer festival.

The enduring favourites - who are best known for eighties hits such as Letter from America, I’m Gonna Be (500 miles) and Let’s Get Married - have been announced as the opening act of Mouth of the Tyne Festival. They are to perform at Tynemouth Priory and Castle on July 6.

North Tyneside Council, which organises the festival, says musician twins Craig and Charlie Reid, whose award-winning success over the decades has taken them around the world, have added the special date to their summer tour and tickets for it will go on sale this Friday.

North Tyneside’s deputy mayor Carl Johnson said: “Charlie and Craig have been entertaining audiences for over 35 years and remain hugely popular across the generations. This promises to be a really enjoyable open-air show at such a spectacular venue with views of the river and sea.”

Gabrielle will play the Mouth of the Tyne Festival in the summer (PR)

In February, Brit Award-winning soul star Gabrielle was the first artist announced for July 6-9 festival, which is now in its 17th year, and she tweeted at the time a reference to her 1993 debut track Dreams, saying: “I can’t wait to party with everyone at Tynemouth and celebrate the record that launched my career three decades ago! Time sure does fly when you are having fun.” She'll be heading the line-up on Sunday, July 9.

Since then post-punk legend Siouxsie was announced for Friday, July 7 and former Beautiful South and Housemartins frontman Paul Heaton for Saturday, July 8. Tickets for all those are already on sale.

Besides the Priory shows, the festival will also include a programme of free street entertainment - which is set to be revealed soon - plus a community parade and special intimate performances at The Playhouse, Whitley Bay. For more information about the festival see its Facebook page here or website here.
