The Open 2023 prize money: How much will each player earn at Royal Liverpool?

The winner of the 151st Open Championship will receive a record payout of $3m (£2.3m) after the R&A announced a record prize fund for this year's tournament.

A total of $16.5m (£12.7m) will be up grabs for players competing at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, an increase of 18% compared to the 150th Open staged at St Andrews.

First place pocketing a figure in excess of £2m marks a rise of $500,000 (£387k) on last year's reward for claiming top spot, earned by Cameron Smith of Australia. Second position will take home a sizeable $1.7m (£1.31m), with third spot in line to receieve just over $1m (£774m).

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said: "Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016.

"While we are seeing substantial increases in prize money across the men's professional game, we are fulfilling our wider obligation to the sport by elevating the AIG Women's Open, strengthening pathways in the elite amateur game and encouraging more people around the world to play golf. We believe that getting this balance right is vital to the long-term future of the sport."

The Open will begin on July 20 and end on July 23, with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm the leading candidates to come out on top. Upon the competition of this event, golf's oldest major will again return to Merseyside in three years' time after Royal Birkdale was yesterday confirmed as the 2026 host venue.
