The 'most popular' UK honeymoon destinations feature four scenic spots in Scotland

With love still in the air after Valentine's Day, a new list detailing the 45 most popular honeymoon destinations in the UK has been revealed.

With February 14 being a common date for couples to get engaged, winter weddings are becoming increasingly popular. With the cost of living crisis continuing to impact people across the UK, many will be unable to afford an overseas honeymoon.

Fortunately, there are plenty of romantic and scenic destinations right here in the UK that would make for the perfect honeymoon spot, particularly in Scotland.

To help couples decide where to head, experts at Fabulous Bingo have ranked 45 of the most popular romantic honeymoon hotspots, having extracted Google search trend data. Four of these are located in Scotland, in areas including Fife and the Isle of Skye.

The top placing Scottish destinations, ranking at number 20 overall, are Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and Portree on the Isle of Skye, both with an average monthly UK search volume of 18,100.

According to Fabulous Bingo, Tobermory offers "beautiful beaches, a picturesque harbour and plenty of outdoor activities, providing extensive activities for those honeymooning".

The most iconic feature of the burgh is its colourful harbour-front buildings, which featured in the popular children's television series Balamory.

Meanwhile, Portree is the main town in the capital of Skye. Like Tobermory, its harbour is among the prominent and photographic sights, and is the perfect spot for a romantic selfie.

There are also plenty of charming and intimate restaurants and hotels to enjoy a cosy evening in with your other half. Fabulous Bingo adds that Portree "has breathtaking views of the Cuillin Mountains and the sea and home to quaint shops and restaurants to explore".

The third Scottish destination to appear on Fabulous Bingo's list, at number 27, is Plockton in the Highlands, with an average of 12,100 monthly searches nationwide.

As well as being home to "stunning beaches, mountains and lochs all providing the perfect backdrop for romantic walks and stunning photographs", the village and its surroundings also offer plenty of tranquil walking and hiking trails.

Coming in at number 31, the historic fishing village of Crail is the fourth and final Scottish destination to feature on the list. With an average of 8,100 searches a month, it is popular for its galleries, unique local shops, restaurants and tearooms.

The experts at Fabulous Bingo added: "Couples can explore Crail’s cobbled streets, historic buildings, and traditional pubs and restaurants. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as golf, fishing, and walking, as well as several romantic pursuits like boat trips, romantic picnics, and horseback riding."

According to Fabulous Bingo, Portmeirion in Gwynedd is the most popular honeymoon spot in the UK, with a monthly UK search average of 110,000. Built in the style of an Italian village, it is easy to see why it is popular amongst people seeking a taste of Europe without the hefty price tag.
