The best dressed at the Emmys 2024 — from Sarah Snook to Ayo Edebiri

The 2024 Emmys. What a night for fans of The Bear, on-stage kisses and red carpet regalia. Spirits were high last night, as one of the biggest awards ceremonies of the season kicked off in celebration of good and great TV.

While an Emmy was once considered a less prestigious award than its film counterparts, last night's Emmys — and its impressive, almost traditional red carpet display — proved that this is no longer the case. As film editor Calum Russell put it in 2021: "The Emmys represent a larger cultural event than the Oscars quite simply because television has become the primary source of entertainment."

And thus, the Emmys outfits really held their own. Dramatic ballgowns were dominant, with Australian actress and Succession star Sarah Snook's sprawling crimson Vivienne Westwood gown providing a truly memorable image of her Outstanding Lead Actress win.

Other regal moments were seen from the likes of Dominique Fishback, the up-and-coming star of Amazon series Swarm, wearing a Cinderella-esque sky blue MiuMiu gown, and Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham, who brought her usual dramatic dressing technique to the Emmys red carpet in a custom Marchesa number that cascaded into a train of tulle.

There were monochromatic moments, too, with The Bear stars Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen-White perfectly coordinating their outfits for the red carpet. Edebiri was widely received as one of the best dressed of the night, in her balloon-like black leather Louis Vuitton dress, and Allen-White's renewed ability to wear a tie (he has gone tie-free at the last string of awards shows) made for a perfect black and white Giorgio Armani tux.

Jessica Chastain brought the colour in a plunging lime green custom Gucci number that descended into a metallic fringe at its hem, courtesy of new creative director Sabato De Sarno. The Interstellar actress doubled down on the verdant tones with her Reza earrings, which bore chunky emerald-green stones.

Aubrey Plaza brought out the more avant-garde with her pin-pricked Loewe gown, a key garment from the brand's SS24 ready-to-wear collection that has yet to make a splash on any red carpets, but was a certified success on The White Lotus actress.

And if you've enjoyed Rihanna and Sienna Miller's bump-first pregnancy dressing, make way for Suki Waterhouse, whose baby with Robert Pattinson is already proving to be a stylish accessory, peeking out of the sides of her postbox-red Valentino couture gown.
