Thanks for loving Lanarkshire gran who's always there for her family despite health concerns

A Motherwell gran who has been battling cancer is the latest recipient of the Wishaw Press’ Say it with Flowers award.

Irene Paterson, 65, who lives in the town’s Shields Court was nominated by her daughter-in-law Amy Sneddon, her son Graham's partner.

The gran-of-three and mum-of-two was diagnosed last year with breast cancer and underwent surgery, but hasn’t let that dampen her enthusiasm for life and her family.

Amy said: “Even the cancer scare never stopped her, she was more worried about how everyone else was going to manage.

“Irene is an amazing granny. She has helped us for years and done absolutely everything for us. You don’t even need to ask her, she just volunteers.

"She’s so supportive and if you’re needing anything she will go and get it for you. And she never asks for anything back. Nothing is ever a bother for her.”

Irene was an employee in Fraser’s department store in Glasgow for a number of years but is now a “24/7 babysitter”, Amy joked.

She said: “She is always there for us and has taken care of our daughter Ellie whenever she can so we can work or have time to ourselves. She’s also very hands on with her other son’s two young children Carmen and Logan.

“Irene just lives down the road from us. And she’s not just a normal granny, she’s a doggy granny too.

“She comes up here every day when I’m at work to let our dog Klaus out and spend time with him.

“Irene is an absolute star and I don’t think there’s another woman like her. She is quite literally an angel.”

When we heard about Irene’s health issues and her love for her family we were delighted to present her with our flowers award courtesy of our friends at the fantastic florists Pixies Petals in Newmains.

If you’d like to nominate someone special then email news@wishawpress.co.uk with their name, the reason why you think they deserve the flowers and a contact number for yourself.
