Tánaiste says 'let your grass grow' as he opens up on love of gardening at Bloom

The Tánaiste was spotted enjoying a day out in the sunshine at Bloom - and revealed he likes gardening in his spare time.

Micheal Martin was out and about at Bord Bia’s festival of food and flowers in the Phoenix Park on Friday.

Martin says he enjoys his own garden at home, and grows a mixture of plants and flowers.

He told the Irish Mirror: “It’s a small garden, but we do grow flowers. White flowers are my favourite.

“But it’s good to have wild flowers in the garden too. I encourage people to let their grass grow as it’s good for the environment.”

He joked: “I tell my wife not to mow the grass.”

He said he enjoyed seeing children so involved in the festival.

“It’s all about bringing it back to the children.

“For example the Rise Garden is a garden that was created by the children of Oberstown (youth detention centre in Dublin.)

“What a fantastic idea to have the children take part in such a great project.”

“It’s great to see them involved in creating the artwork for the garden and they picked the pink and purple colours themselves.”

The Tanaiste also had a special mention for the large show garden, called First 5 Garden of Wonder and Discovery, which shows how children benefit from outdoor play in the natural world.

Festival organisers are expecting approximately 100,000 to come through the gates of the country’s biggest outdoor space in total, over the five-day festival, which ends on Monday evening.

The weather has been on its side, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s.

Organisers have also urged attendees to arrive early and to use all the Phoenix Park gates, instead of just the Parkgate street gate.

The 5 day family-friendly and wheelchair-friendly festival ends on Monday with a half price sale on plants at 3pm on the closing day.

Free shuttle buses from the festival gates to and from Heuston Station are running every few minutes.
