Some of Australia's leading arts companies are welcoming people behind the scenes in Sydney's new cultural hub.

The $371 million Walsh Bay Arts Precinct is holding its inaugural open day Saturday, with a program of 40 free events.

Completed earlier in 2022, the development is home to the Sydney Theatre Company and Bangarra Dance Theatre as well as half a dozen other top flight arts organisations.

Bell Shakespeare will take visitors behind the scenes for rehearsals of its new pop musical The Lovers, based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, as well as hosting Shakespeare workshops for young people.

Gondwana Choirs is running singing workshops for families, while Sydney Philharmonia Choirs hosts workshops for adult singers of all abilities, accompanied by a live string quartet and piano.

Nearby, Sydney Dance Company is offering classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, jazz and tap, and visitors are invited to watch rehearsals of a new work titled Summer.

At Sydney Theatre Company, people can also check out set, costume and props workshops, and children can attend acting classes.

Australian Theatre for Young People will host a treasure hunt across the precinct and more drama workshops with improvisational theatre games.

At Bangarra Dance Theatre, kids get to make their own turtle sculptures and posters while learning about Torres Strait Islands culture.

There will also be a Directors' Roundtable, in which the companies' artistic directors discuss the future of the Australian cultural landscape.

The Walsh Bay Arts Precinct Open Day is on Saturday 8 October from 10am - 4pm.
