Stranger Things Season 4: Five clues in Netflix trailer that leave fans fearing the worst

Netflix finally dropped a full length trailer for Stranger Things Season 4 on Tuesday (April 12) and there's plenty for fans to digest.

It's already been confirmed that the fourth series will be the final instalment of the science fiction horror drama, and it looks like The Duffer Brothers have pulled out all the stops.

The epic trailer, which runs for just over three minutes, teases that "a war is coming" and that our favourite characters in Hawkins are "very much in the eye of the storm".

Since the trailer dropped, eagle-eyed fans have been speculating about what could happen and these clues have left them fearing the worst...

Max is in trouble

Max Mayfield features several times in the brand new trailer and things aren't looking good for the red-headed teen.

Max (Sadie Elizabeth Sink) first appears in a graveyard as she perches in front of her step brother Billy's headstone.

Reading a letter to him, she says: "Dear Billy, I don't know if you can ever hear this. Ever since you left, everything has been a total disaster. For a while we tried to be happy, normal, but I know that's impossible."

Two minutes later, fans see Max levitating in front of the gravestone - but this she is joined by Lucas Sinclair, Steve Harrington and Dustin Henderson - who look on in shock.

Fans immediately thought the worst and took to Twitter to comment, with one person writing: "I’m gonna need Lucas to step tf up and protect his girl cuz she’s one of my favs."

Another said: "MAX IS FLOATING OMG WTF IS HAPPENING SEND HELP OMG," and a third fan tweeted: "Literally, what's up with Max Please don't hurt her."

And someone else compared it to a scene in Stephen King's It and wrote: "The part were max is being lifted through the air it's probably a nod to Stephen King's It the same way Beverly was."

A mysterious package arrives

Halfway through the trailer, Joyce Byers is seen inspecting a mysterious package which has arrived at her home in Hawkins.

The mother-of-two (Winona Ryder) looked shocked as she runs her hand over the box, and has the camera angle changes, many stamps are seen on the parcel - which appear to confirm that it has come from Russia - where Jim Hopper is currently imprisoned.

Fans picked up on it immediately, with one person asking: "WHAT ABOUT THIS ORDER FROM RUSSIA AT JOYCE'S HOUSE? #StrangerThings."

Another urged: "Bring back jim for joyce pls #StrangerThings #StrangerThings4," and a third added: "i swear to god, if season 4 k*lls off joyce, steve, nancy, robin or jonathan, i swear to f*cking god. i'd rather they take the kids... YES! i said it! #strangerthings."

Someone else posted: "I THINK THEYRE FLAYING MAX AND DOING SOMETHING TO JOYCE F*CK #StrangerThings #StrangerThings4."

Jim Hopper battered and bruised

At the end of season three, fans were left thinking Jim Hopper was actually dead - but it seems he's actually alive, and not so well, in a Russian prison.

Just over a minute into the season 4 trailer, viewers get a glimpse of Jim (David Harbour) rocking a shaved head and looking very concerned as he is transported somewhere.

Another snippet shows him tied to a chair, battered and bruised as someone places a gas mask over his head.

Jim is heard saying: "I was convinced I was put here for some other reason. Maybe I can still help. Even if it's the last thing I do," as someone is seen setting a spear on fire.

One fan took to Twitter and predicted: "Hopper shows the Russians that fire deters/defeats the demogorgons in prison. (He likes it cold.) They send Hopp to the upside down with a flamethrower and there he reunites with Steve and the gang…or El. Or Joyce."

Could Jim be the one to save the day? And if so, will he survive this time?

The Creepy Creel House

It's already been confirmed that the Creel residence will play a "pivotal" role in season four of Stranger Things.

Fans get another glimpse of the creepy house in the trailer as well as the grandfather clock that sits inside.

One of the sho's creators teased: "...I don’t want to give away too much other than to say this clock plays a very, very important role moving forward."

The Creel family was a family that bought a house in Hawkins back in 1959. They experienced strange, and supernatural occurrences in their home during their residency.

This subsequently resulted in a multiple homicide committed in the home. The home was thereafter abandoned and left vacant for many years.

Victor Creel was committed to a mental institution for his apparent role in the homicides and now fans think he is the one possessed by the "mind flayer" of the Upside Down.

Robert Englund, best known for playing Freddy Krueger, appears in the trailer as an old Mr Creel and has lost his eyesight.

One fan immediately predicted: "I may be getting really crazy but this theory of mine makes a lot of sense. After years Mr. Creel is still alive and already old, he took out his own eyes to give to the mind flayer."

Another tweeted: "I know Netflix has said he's in a psychiatric ward but i'm 94% sure this new monster is somehow Victor Creel."

Referring to a terrifying clip of the Mind Flayer's claws, another person posted: "THIS IS 100% A DIRECT REFERENCE TO FREDDY KRUEGER."

Eleven has no powers

It's confirmed in the trailer that Eleven has been relocated to California, Dr Sam Owens is heard telling her: "We located you guys far from Hawkins because I thought you'd be safe.

"A war is coming... I'm afraid your friends in Hawkins are very much in the eye of the storm," he continues, as El (Millie Bobby Brown) tells him: "I don't have my powers."

Dr Owens replies: "I don't know how to tell you this, but without you, we cannot win this war."

And a blink and you'll miss it scene shows El with her head shaved again - and fans are convinced it's not a flashback.

One person tweeted: "Owens tells El they can't win the war without her, so they take her to the lab to try to bring back her powers. And are they going to shave her head again?! Cuz she doesn't look like a 11yo kid in the last pic imo."

It's unsure if El's supernatural powers will return and if she will be able to defeat the Mind Flayer another time - and somehow save everyone in the process.

The trailer ends with the demon saying: "It's time. You have lost," but it's unsure if that direct threat is aimed at El.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 1 lands on Netflix on May 27 and Volume 2 follows on July 1.
