Storms impact both coasts with snow, rain, and flooding

Heavy rain expected in southern California

Winter storms are expected to impact both the East and West Coasts of the United States over the course of the next few days. In the eastern part of the country, New England will see snowfall, while the DC area and surrounding regions will experience heavy rain and the possibility of flooding. Meanwhile, California is also bracing for more rain and potential flooding in the coming week.

According to weather reports, residents in the DC area should prepare for a snow-filled weekend. With an anticipated snowfall of one to three inches, families are encouraged to embrace the winter weather and enjoy outdoor activities such as sledding. Winter weather advisories have been issued for various areas along the East Coast, and over 40 million Americans are under some form of winter weather alert.

Northern New England is currently feeling the impact of the first storm system, with winter weather alerts and warnings in place. In the mid-Atlantic region, which includes DC and Philadelphia but not New York City, winter storm watches and alerts have also been issued. Radar images reveal snow showers forming downwind of Lake Ontario, which may potentially make travel difficult along major interstate highways such as 90, 81, and 86.

Another separate storm system is expected to bring snowfall to areas south of the Chicago suburbs, reaching as far as Indianapolis. This system is predicted to move across the country and bring snowfall overnight to the nation's capital, as well as central and eastern parts of Pennsylvania. New York City may see a few snowflakes, but significant accumulation is not expected in the city. The majority of the snowfall is anticipated to occur in Maryland and along the Delmarva Peninsula.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, a completely separate storm system known as an atmospheric river is forecasted to bring continuous rainfall and mountain snow throughout the weekend and into the first half of next week. Residents in Gulf Coast states, such as Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, should also expect a wet weekend.

With multiple storm systems converging across the country, it is important for residents to stay informed and prepared. Authorities are advising caution while traveling, especially on major highways that may be affected by snow and ice. Additionally, those in low-lying areas prone to flooding should be mindful of potential risks and take necessary precautions.
