SSPCA issues warning for walking dogs in Glasgow's hot weather

The SSPCA (Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) have issued a warning to pet owners in Glasgow.

In their Animal Welfare Weekly newsletter, which was sent to subscribers who have signed up to some of their e-mail alerts, the charity warned that with temperatures warming up in some areas, it is crucial that people take caution.

It comes as a Glasgow saw highs of 24C last week with temperatures set to continue into their mid-20s this week and into the weekend - a repeat of the last few days.

In their warning they reminded owners: "As you enjoy the weather over the next few weeks, there are easy steps you can take to keep your pets, farm animals and wildlife safe."

SSPCA warning to pet owners as summer temperatures soar in Glasgow

DO

  • Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
  • Have plenty of fresh water available for animals and visiting wildlife.
  • Keep animal tanks and enclosures indoors and out of direct sunlight. You can also cover them with a damp towel for extra protection from the sun.
  • Make sure coats are free of tangles and matts
  • Shorten or skip walks if you have a brachycephalic (flat faced) breed of dog, as they are less tolerant of warm weather.
  • Contact your vet immediately if you think your animal is suffering from heatstroke.

DON'T

  • Walk your dog in hot weather, if the pavement is too hot for your hand it's too hot for their paws!
  • Leave your dog in a car. Leaving a window open or parking in the shade is not enough - don't risk it.
  • Forget to check and adjust heating equipment to make sure exotic animal enclosures are at the correct temperate.
