Spice Girls stood for gay power, not just girl power, says Attitude winner Mel C

Mel C shows her flex appeal as she celebrates winning an honorary gay award by balancing a trophy on her foot.

Rumours about Sporty Spice’s sexuality have been rife since the Spice Girls found fame in 1996.

But singer Mel, 48, said: “I had zero problem with people thinking I was gay. If I was gay, so what? It’s not a bad thing, it’s a brilliant thing.”

Telling of her pride at winning “honorary gay” at Attitude magazine’s awards, she added: “The Spice Girls were about embracing individuality.

“Everybody was invited into our gang. It wasn’t just girl power, it was gay power.”

Footie fan Mel also told of opposing Qatar, with its shocking homophobia and human rights record, hosting the World Cup.

Her book Who I Am and Attitude: The Awards Issue are out now.
