Shang-Chi 2 Confirmed: Simu Liu Promises Sequel Still In Development

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings-FanArt

Marvel Studios star Simu Liu has addressed rumors that Shang-Chi 2 could be canceled, as Liu's titular hero hasn't been seen since 2021. Liu debuted as Shang-Chi in Phase 4's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a project that provided answers to questions from the beginning of the MCU. The introduction of the MCU's real Mandarin and his ancient weapons, the Ten Rings, expanded the franchise in interesting ways.

Speculation arose about the cancellation of the highly-anticipated sequel due to limited information on Shang-Chi's future in the MCU. However, Simu Liu confirmed that Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi 2, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is still in development. Liu reassured fans by stating, 'I proooomiss it's happening.'

The sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was confirmed in December 2021, with Destin Daniel Cretton returning as the director. Not much has been revealed about the production of Shang-Chi 2, but it is expected that Simu Liu will reprise his role, alongside Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, and Benedict Wong.

Destin Daniel Cretton may transition to Shang-Chi 2 after completing the MCU's Wonder Man series, which wrapped filming in April 2024. This could potentially lead to Shang-Chi 2 being released before the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga in 2027, with Liu possibly appearing in upcoming Avengers projects.

Marvel Studios has vacant release slots for unannounced films before the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. While the 2025 schedule is full, potential release dates for Shang-Chi 2 could be in 2026. Despite a possible five-year gap between the original film and its sequel, fans can anticipate Simu Liu's return in the MCU's future.
