Netflix has announced that the popular HBO series Sex and the City will be available for streaming on its platform starting April 1. This marks the first time that all six seasons of the show will be accessible on Netflix, in addition to its current availability on HBO Max.
The decision to bring Sex and the City to Netflix comes as part of a content agreement between Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO's parent company, and Netflix. This agreement, made last July, includes a licensing deal for several series, with Sex and the City being one of the highlighted shows.
Alongside Sex and the City, other series included in the deal are Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Ballers, Insecure, and True Blood. The addition of these popular shows to Netflix's library aims to provide viewers with a diverse range of content to enjoy.
Sex and the City, which originally premiered in 1998, follows the lives of four women living in New York City as they navigate love, friendship, and relationships in the bustling metropolis. The show, starring Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall, has garnered a dedicated fan base over the years.
In a statement addressing the strategy shift to license HBO content to Netflix, HBO chief Casey Bloys emphasized the importance of finding a balance between protecting successful shows and exploring new distribution opportunities. Bloys highlighted the historical significance of syndication in television and expressed confidence in the co-exclusive licensing approach being adopted.
While the original Sex and the City series will soon be available on Netflix, the two movies based on the show and the sequel series, And Just Like That, will remain exclusive to HBO Max. This move reflects the evolving landscape of streaming services and the strategic decisions being made by content providers to reach wider audiences.
