Senator Warner emphasizes need for stronger response against Iran's proxies

Lloyd J. Austin

Defense Secretary's Apology Over Delayed Response

In a recent interview, Senator Mark Warner discussed Defense Secretary's delayed response and subsequent apology for the situation. Warner stated that he believed the defense secretary's explanation was straightforward and that he took full responsibility for his actions. The senator commended him for not trying to evade responsibility and acknowledged his apology to his team and the American people. However, some Republican colleagues have called for his resignation, arguing that he made serious errors in judgment that should not be overlooked.

Regarding the defense secretary's remarks about the fine line between taking on Iran and being at war with Iran, Senator Warner offered his perspective. The senator shared insights from a bipartisan intelligence trip to the region, where it was repeatedly mentioned that while Iran supports Houthi rebels, they do not have direct control over them. He emphasized that this did not absolve Iran of responsibility, but it highlighted the complex dynamics at play. Warner expressed the need for stronger pushback against the Houthis, suggesting that targeting their command and control centers could have a greater impact rather than focusing solely on their launching capabilities.

Furthermore, regarding the recent attack by Shia groups that resulted in the death of three American servicemembers, Warner urged a stronger response. He mentioned former President Trump's stance on potential strikes in Iran, highlighting the precision strike that took out General Soleimani in Baghdad instead. Warner emphasized the importance of not engaging in an active war with Iran at this moment, as it may not align with the interests of the American people. However, he stressed the need to hold those responsible for the attack accountable to ensure justice for the fallen soldiers.

When discussing the perception of the president's caution in responding to repeated attacks by Iran or its proxies, Senator Warner pointed out that there have been close to 170 attacks to which the US has responded less than a dozen times. He noted that some of these attacks aimed to harm Americans indirectly but acknowledged the changing landscape following the incident in Jordan. Warner emphasized the need for a more forceful response against Iranian forces in the region while distinguishing it from striking within Iran's territorial borders. He concluded by affirming the importance of careful and strategic action, stating that doing it right is better than rushing into it.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the president will respond and whether his actions will be deemed sufficient by both the senator and the American people. The ongoing tensions with Iran and its proxies continue to pose significant challenges for US foreign policy in the region.
