Seahawks signing former D3 cornerback to fill out 90-man roster

If there is one thing Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is known for, it’s finding diamonds in the rough when it comes to defensive backs. The man has helped develop some of the best secondary stars in recent memory, and mostly from the later rounds. Players like Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and rookie standout Tariq Woolen.

Now, another young man has a chance to make an impression before Carroll and his defensive staff. According to a report by Eric Edholm, the Seahawks are signing former Washington University cornerback Andrew Whitaker.

Before you re-read the previous sentence, no, he’s not from UW or Washington State. We’re talking Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri – a private, Division III university.

Whitaker is listed at 6-foot-1, 174 pounds. In his career for the WashU Bears, Whitaker recorded seven interceptions, 23 pass defenses, and 145 tackles. Adding Whitaker will round out Seattle’s 90-man roster heading into training camp.

Naturally, it will be quite the uphill climb for Whitaker to make the final roster, especially considering how crowded Seattle’s secondary looks to be. But in the NFL, anything is possible. No other league features the amount of undrafted talented players like the NFL does.
