Scottie Scheffler wins the Phoenix Open as Irish challenge fades during final round

Scottie Scheffler held his nerve to edge out Canadian Nick Taylor during the final round of the Phoenix Open in Arizona.

Scheffler hit a fourth round of 65 to seal victory on 19 under, two shots clear of Taylor and regain the World Number 1 ranking. It is the American's first victory since he won the Masters at Augusta in 2022. John Rahm finished third some 5 shots off the lead.

It was a frustrating day though for the Irish contingent as Seamus Power and Rory McIlroy failed to make much of an impact during the final round. It was even worse for Offaly's Shane Lowry as he failed to make the cut.

The damage for McIlroy was done early doors as he carded a first round 73 after just two birdies and four bogeys. The Northern-Irishman carded an impressive second round of 67 but could only manage back to back 70s in round 3 and 4. He ended up finishing tied for 32nd.

Seamus Power was the best placed of the Irish as he finished tied for 20th after a third round of 66 and fourth of 69. It was his two preceding rounds of 71 that prevented him challenging towards the top of the leaderboard.

But it was Scheffler who stole the show as he succesfully defended his Phoenix Open title. Since he won this event last year he has gone on to notch up four other PGA Tour wins including that Masters triumph in what has been an excellent twelve months for the American.
