Both O'Connor and McMahon appeared on Friday's Late Late Show and the eight-time All-Ireland winner discussed his connections with the Dublin prison.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy he said: "Unfortunately my brother John fell into that pathway and along that journey, particularly when you are struggling with addiction, you generally start off at a certain age able to work and be functional.

"My brother John was functional in terms of his addiction and was able to pay for his habit, which at that time you were probably looking at 20 to 30 thousand euro a year.

"At a point, his employer figured out what was going on and he was probably stealing from the home. The family had to evict him from the home because you're essentially feeding his habit and ends up on the streets.

"He ends up committing crimes to feed his habit and was actually in Mountjoy as well. I see in a lot of people in my programme and a lot of people in this programme I see my brother.

"For me, it's where I can roll up my sleeves and make a difference to people who have made mistakes. I would have loved my brother to have had that support.

"You're never going to completely change somebody, there is a journey along with it and it's very complex and I'm just very lucky to be given the chance to be able to do it."

And viewers were full of praise for McMahon after his appearance.

One RTE viewer said: "@PhillyMcMahon is such a lovely fella. So down to earth to and an absolute gent. Delighted to see him on."

While another said: "@PhillyMcMahon is such a lovely fella. So down to earth to and an absolute gent. Delighted to see him on."

While another added: "@PhillyMcMahon yet again putting your shoulder to the wheel. Brilliant interview, looking forward to the documentary."
