Restaurant owner's clever Tripadvisor response to customer's claims about portion sizes

A restaurant owner has directly responded after a diner claimed that portion sizes at his eatery had "shrunk".

The customer claimed that although the food at Five Spice "used to always be excellent" - the restaurant was now "going downhill".

The diner, identified as Myles, claimed on Tripadvisor that "portion sizes have definitely shrunk as has the menu" at the restaurant in Belbroughton, located between Kidderminster, Stourbridge and Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.

But the restaurant replied directly - correcting the customer's claims.

Five Spice currently has a rating of 4.5 stars from more than 600 reviews on Tripadvisor, Birmingham Live reports.

Of those, 448 reviewers awarded the restaurant the rating of 'excellent', the highest mark possible.

One reviewer, identified as Amar, said: "Relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff and good service. Food was nicely presented and had good flavours throughout the menu. Very nice desserts."

While another recent review said: "This part of the West Midlands is not short of good curry joints, but this place definitely excels, both in the range and the quality of food on offer.

“Decor and service are both superb. We have visited three times and have not been disappointed. Recommended."

But Myles did not share a similar meal in comparison to other recent reviews.

Rating his time at Five Spice just three out of five stars, his review headline simply said: "Going downhill".

His review in full said: "Been going here for many years and used to always be excellent. Last went a few months ago and food was average and my most recent visit food was poor.

"Portion sizes have definitely shrunk as has the menu. Certain pieces of chicken in my curry were chewy and sauce way under par.

"Wasn’t enough to complain but gone downhill. Shame but won’t be returning for the foreseeable."

However, the owner of Five Spice, identified as Sadiq, cleverly replied back on Tripadvisor over claims that portion sizes had shrunk.

Sadiq disputed the claim - and stated that this was simply not true.

His response in full said: "Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. I'm sorry to hear that you were not happy on your last visit.

"We would have been happy to take the feedback on your visit, which would have allowed us to rectify any issues. We can assure you that our portion size has not changed, only the crockery it has been served in. Thank you, Five Spice."

Five Spice has 634 independent reviews on TripAdvisor. One recent review said: "Stumbled across this as the local curry house to the campsite. And wow. What a place.

"Nice country views from our side. Good service all the way through. Saag bhaji fritters were absolutely stunning. An amazing starter.

"Meat & veggie platters also excellent. Bags of flavour. Lots of variety. Duck bhuna was new to me. V tasty again. Brother had fish jhali jalab naga. Amazing again. Pricey? Yes. Tasty? Heck yes!"

While a visitor added: "Great place to eat! Food 11/10 brilliant! Service was great.. all staff friendly and polite and very attentive. Excellent!"
