Rangers trio see Nigeria axe entire coaching staff following World Cup failure

Nigeria Football Federation technical director Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down and the entire men's senior national team coaching staff have been sacked following their failure to earn a place at World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

The decision leaves some uncertainty for Rangers stars Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun who featured in the game against Ghana.

The Super Eagles were knocked out on the away goals rule by Ghana in their final playoff round tie after a 1-1 draw that sparked riots on the pitch and recriminations off it.

Nigeria won't be at the showpiece event despite having reached six of the previous seven World Cup finals dating back to the 1994 tournament in the United States.

Their failure to do so has resulted in a whole backroom clear out as a statement from the Nigerian FF read.

"Technical Adviser Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from that position with immediate effect," The NFF said in a statement on Thursday.

"The NFF has in the meantime terminated the appointment of the entire technical crew of the team with immediate effect.

"A new crew will be announced after a proper review to lead the new charge of reinvigorating the Super Eagles to face future challenges appropriately."

Former Nigeria internationals Emmanuel Amuneke, Joseph Yobo and Salisu Yusuf only joined Eguavoen's technical team last month with reassurances of two-and-a-half year contracts, which have now been withdrawn as a result of the failure to qualify for the World Cup.
