Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for a proposed prisoner exchange involving late opposition leader Alexei Navalny just days before Navalny's death. Putin mentioned that he was informed about the idea of exchanging Navalny for certain individuals held in penitentiary facilities in western countries and indicated his agreement with the proposal.

Navalny, a prominent opposition figure in Russia, passed away while serving a 19-year sentence on extremism charges that he believed were politically motivated. His associates and Western officials have accused the Kremlin of being responsible for his death, a claim that Russian authorities have denied.

Putin's comments came during a late-night news conference following early results from a presidential election that is expected to extend his rule. The election showed Putin leading with over 87% of the votes in a race with no competition, amidst ongoing suppression of opposition voices and independent media in Russia.

Navalny's allies had been in talks with Russian and Western officials regarding a potential prisoner swap involving Navalny, with discussions reportedly in their final stages before Navalny's sudden and unexplained death in a penal colony. However, no concrete evidence has been provided to support claims that Navalny's demise was orchestrated to prevent the exchange.

The circumstances surrounding Navalny's death have raised questions and concerns, with his associates alleging that the Kremlin sought to avoid the prisoner swap by eliminating Navalny. Despite Putin's acknowledgment of the proposed exchange, he emphasized that Navalny would not be allowed to return to Russia.

Navalny's case has drawn international attention, particularly due to his poisoning in 2020, which he attributed to the Kremlin. Following his arrest upon his return to Russia, Navalny had been detained until his passing, with his supporters continuing to push for accountability and justice in his case.

The situation involving Navalny and the proposed prisoner exchange underscores the complex political dynamics in Russia and the challenges faced by opposition figures in the country.
