Pro Football Hall Of Famer Jimmy Johnson Dies At 86

San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame football player Jimmy Johnson, left, is honored by owner Jed York before an NFL game between the 49ers and St. Louis Rams in San Francisco, Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011

Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back Jimmy Johnson, a three-time All-Pro and member of the All-Decade Team of the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 86. Johnson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994, spent his entire 16-year professional career with the San Francisco 49ers.

Known for his exceptional athleticism, Johnson was a versatile player who initially played on both offense and defense for the 49ers. However, he eventually settled in as a left cornerback where he excelled, earning a reputation as a 'lockdown' cornerback who could effectively shut down opposing offenses.

During his career, Johnson appeared in 213 games for the 49ers, setting a team record at the time of his retirement. He recorded a total of 47 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns, showcasing his ability as a stingy cover man with a keen eye for the ball.

In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Johnson was also recognized for his courage and dedication to the game. In 1971, he was honored with the George Halas Award for his courageous play during a three-year stretch as an All-Pro.

Off the field, Johnson was described as the epitome of a 49er, known for his humility, kindness, and amiable personality. Former teammates and coaches praised his skills, with some even comparing him favorably to other legendary cornerbacks of his era.

Johnson's legacy extended beyond football, as he came from a family of athletic achievers. His brother, Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson, presented him for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

Reflecting on his career, Johnson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, acknowledging the role his brother played in his success. He credited Rafer as his hero and mentor, emphasizing the profound impact his brother had on his athletic journey.

Jimmy Johnson's contributions to the game of football and his lasting impact on the San Francisco 49ers organization will be remembered by fans and fellow players alike. His legacy as a standout cornerback and a beloved member of the football community will endure for years to come.
