A woman found fatally injured in a Sydney home has been identified by police who are appealing for public information to solve what they say is her suspicious death.

Erin Gilbert, 42, was discovered in the living area of her Merrylands apartment after neighbours called police about 11.30pm on Sunday to report concerns for her welfare.

When officers arrived at the Newman Street unit they found Ms Gilbert's 38-year-old husband trying to resuscitate her.

"Her partner was there doing CPR on her," Cumberland Police Area Commander Andrew Holland told reporters on Tuesday.

"The injuries (were) very serious and severe. Unfortunately we don't know the exact cause of death at this point."

Ms Gilbert's husband - who has not been publicly identified - was taken to Granville Police Station for questioning and has since been released without charge.

"We believe Erin was at home in the unit block that evening," Superintendent Holland said. "Neighbours heard her at the unit block ... we're just concerned someone else may have been at the unit block with her."

Police established a crime scene and specialist forensic police are investigating the suspicious death.

"There's been an extensive search of the location, the grounds surrounding the area along the streets (and) CCTV footage of her partner and where he's been," Supt Holland said.

"Erin and her partner are well known in the local community," he said, adding that Ms Gilbert's husband had been "very forthcoming".

"He hasn't been ruled in or ruled out at this stage," Supt Holland said.

Ms Gilbert had been known to police for "some minor matters" and the couple had been living in the Parramatta area for the past few years before recently moving into the Merrylands apartment.

Police are appealing for help to establish a timeline in the case.

"Something has happened Sunday night. When police arrived, she hadn't been passed away for long," Supt Holland said.
