Police probe deliberate Kilmarnock takeaway blaze as CCTV scoured for clues

Detectives are treating an early-morning fire at a Kilmarnock takeaway as deliberate.

Emergency services were called to the Burgur Grill eaterie in the town's Titchfield Street around 2am on Friday.

Four appliances from the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service tackled the ground-floor blaze. No one was injured but police say "extensive damage" has been caused.

The incident played havoc with rush-hour traffic which was diverted round Kilmarnock town centre's one-way system with Titchfield Street closed as firefighters got the situation under control.

Police are treating the matter as wilful fire-raising and have this weekend launched an appeal for information in a bid to trace those responsible for what happened.

In particular, detectives are scouring CCTV and believe passing motorists may hold the key to solving the case. A request for dash-cam footage has also been issued.

Detective Constable Paul Gartland of Kilmarnock CID said: "Although this fire happened in the early hours of the morning, from CCTV we know that there were a number of cars or taxis in the area at the time.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the street and who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or running from the building between 1.45am and 2am.

"Also, if you have dash-cam footage from the road between those times, then please get in touch as it may have captured footage that may help our investigation."

Information can be passed to officers via 101 quoting reference number 0347 of Friday, 26 May 2023. Alternatively, details can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
