An officer has been hit by a car that police were trying to stop on a country highway, with the arrested driver expected to face serious charges.

The incident unfolded on the Barrier Highway at Ucolta in South Australia at 3pm on Friday, when police were attempting to stop the vehicle.

The officer was taken to Peterborough Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

A police helicopter tracked the car for 45 minutes until it could be pulled over, with its driver arrested near the highway about 1.6km north of Hallett.

SA Police say the 43-year-old driver from Victoria is expected to face serious charges in Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

His vehicle was seized for forensic testing, and crash investigators have examined the scene and will assist detectives in their investigation.
