Pensioner dies after driving his mobility scooter off beach promenade

A pensioner died after driving his mobility scooter off of a beach promenade. Richard Jones, 78, misjudged the edge of the promenade and fell to his death, reports North Wales Live.

An inquest held at Ruthin County Hall heard that the tragic incident took place last year in Wales. The 78-year-old had suffered a bleed on the brain in the 1970s which impacted his mobility.

Therefore purchasing a mobility scooter allowed Mr Jones to continue his beloved walks with his wife along the prom near their home in Prestatyn. However, the inquest heard that Mr Jones "fell over a lot" and sometimes struggled to control his scooter.

On August 7 2022, Mr Jones is said to have "misjudged" the Prestatyn promenade edge while on his mobility scooter and fell around eight feet down some steps. Following the fall, Mr Jones sustained "serious head injuries" and was rushed to hospital.

The 78-year-old was given palliative care and sadly died six days later at the Bodelwyddan hospital on August 13, 2022. The inquest heard that the cause of Mr Jones' death was a bilateral subdural haematoma and subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a fall from height.

Senior coroner for North Wales east and central John Gittins concluded it was an accidental death.
