Padraic Joyce set for three more years as Galway boss

Padraic Joyce is set to continue as Galway senior football manager for a further three years.

Galway GAA’s management committee is recommending that the 45-year-old’s term be extended up the end of the 2025 Championship and the ratification of the proposal should be a formality at next week’s county board meeting.

Joyce had already completed his initial three-year term and should he go the distance with this one he would outlast his predecessor Kevin Walsh for longevity by completing six seasons at the helm having been appointed in late 2019.

The Killererin clubman endured a mixed first two years at helm as, after making an impressive start to his first League campaign in 2020, Galway faltered when games resumed later in the year after the disruptions brought about by Covid-19, while last year they suffered relegation to Division Two and a second successive Connacht final defeat to Mayo.

There was a marked improvement in their fortunes in 2022, however, as they earned promotion and regained the Connacht title with wins over Mayo, Leitrim and Roscommon before beating Armagh on penalties and then Derry to reach their first All-Ireland final since 2001.

They suffered a four-point defeat to Kerry but optimism around the team’s prospects haven’t been higher since Joyce’s playing career was in its pomp a couple of decades ago, hence Galway officials’ eagerness to retain his services.

Elsewhere, Donal O Fatharta and Alan Glynn will be proposed for one-year extensions as under-20 and minor football managers respectively.
