Old Canton pub to reopen as part of the Lounges chain in Cardiff

The popular Lounges bar chain is opening its fourth venue in Cardiff. It's transforming a former pub in Canton into a retro-inspired retreat, with a nod to a glamorous bygone era.

The former Tafarn Treganna pub is being renamed as Hudo Lounge. With a nod to Welsh culture 'Hudo' is Welsh for 'bewitch, charm or enchant' and the name is partly inspired by Shirley Bassey's album The Bewitching of Miss Bassey.

Hudo Lounge will open on Saturday, December 3 at 160-162 Cowbridge Road East. Customers will be able to enjoy an extensive menu featuring everything from brunch options to relaxed evening dinners.

The all-day menu will include everything from tapas and salads to burgers and buttermilk fried chicken, with vegans and those favouring a gluten-free diet well catered for with their very own menus. Particular attention will be paid to families with a selection of games, books, colouring pencils and pads on offer. A full menu, high chairs and baby-changing facilities are also available for 'Little Loungers.'

The restaurant will be decorated with heavily-patterned wallpaper and tiling while stripped wooden floors will feature alongside oversized vintage sofas, upholstered lounge chairs, eclectic artwork and statement wall and pendant lighting, creating a variety of cosy and elegant drinking and dining areas to choose from. There will be 26 new jobs created from the Hudo Lounge, including the front and back of house.

Gemma Irwin, Community Manager at Loungers, said: “We are delighted to be bringing Loungers to Canton. Our Lounges strive to put community at the heart of hospitality and our teams always go the extra mile to make a difference. They are actively encouraged to connect with their communities by working with local groups, charities, organisations and businesses that are at the heart of the fabric of local life. We are very much looking forward to welcoming local residents to Hudo Lounge.”

Currently there is a Fino Lounge in Whitchurch, Juno Lounge in Roath and an Ocho Lounge in Penarth. You can keep up to date with the latest What's On news by signing up to the newsletter here.
