NYU Requests NYPD Assistance During Campus Protests

Demonstrators protest in solidarity with Pro-Palestinian organizers on the Columbia University campus, in New York City

New York University requested assistance from the New York Police Department on Monday night following reports of intimidating chants and antisemitic incidents during protests, according to a statement released by the university.

The protests initially involved around 50 individuals on Gould Plaza on campus, which took place without prior notice or authorization from the university. In response, NYU closed access to the plaza, set up barriers, and restricted additional protesters from joining due to disruptions to classes and campus operations.

Despite the university's initial decision not to disband the protest to avoid escalation, the situation took a turn when more protesters, believed to be unaffiliated with NYU, breached the barriers and joined the demonstration. This breach led to disorderly and antagonizing behavior, raising concerns about the safety and security of the community.

After failed attempts to disperse the protesters peacefully, NYU sought assistance from the NYPD. The police intervened, urging the individuals to leave peacefully and making several arrests in the process.

NYU emphasized its commitment to upholding freedom of expression while prioritizing the safety of its students and maintaining a conducive learning environment. The university expressed disappointment over the turn of events and reiterated its stance on supporting individuals' rights to peaceful protest.
