New York Yankees Considering Pre-Opening Day Trade For Infielder

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) building after the start of Thursday's trading session in New York

The New York Yankees are gearing up for the upcoming season, but they are facing some roster challenges that need to be addressed before Opening Day. With key players like DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza starting the year on the injured list, the team finds itself in need of additional infield depth.

Oswaldo Cabrera is set to take over as the starting third baseman in the absence of LeMahieu, but the Yankees lack a true backup infielder. While Cabrera is a versatile player who can handle multiple positions, his offensive production in the previous season was subpar, highlighting the team's need for a more reliable option.

Aside from Cabrera, the Yankees have limited infield options on their current roster. Jahmai Jones, primarily a second baseman with minimal experience at third base, is a potential candidate for the backup role. Jorbit Vivas, a promising prospect acquired in the offseason, has yet to make his MLB debut.

The team's bench composition is further complicated by the presence of three catchers, including Ben Rortvedt, who is out of minor-league options. The Yankees face a dilemma with Rortvedt, as demoting him would expose him to waivers and potential claims by other teams.

To address their roster imbalance, the Yankees are considering a pre-Opening Day trade, with Rortvedt being a potential trade piece. Several teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland A’s, and Arizona Diamondbacks, are in need of catching depth and could be trade partners for the Yankees.

While Rortvedt is valued for his defensive skills, his offensive contributions are limited, prompting the Yankees to explore trade options for a more well-rounded infielder. The team is looking to bolster their bench with players who can provide stability at shortstop and third base while offering a better offensive output than Cabrera.

As the regular season approaches, the Yankees are actively seeking solutions to fortify their roster and ensure they have the necessary depth to compete. Keep an eye out for potential trades in the coming days as the team looks to address their infield deficiencies before the start of the season.
