New scholarships focused on boosting doctor presence in rural Kentucky

The University of Kentucky along with a well-known health insurer are combining their efforts, in hopes of seeing more doctors in rural communities across the Commonwealth. It comes in the form of additional scholarships.

The initiative is through UK’s College of Medicine and Anthem Blue Cross-Blue Shield Medicaid in Kentucky. It will provide $100,000 to help offset the costs of medical school. Seven scholarships will go to students in the Rural Physician Leadership Program.

Morehead State University and St. Clare Healthcare are also involved in the R-P-L-P program. With a capacity of 12 students per year, the Rural Physician Leadership Program was developed to train students interested in practicing rural medicine.

In its 10-year history, the program has graduated 110 doctors well-versed in rural medicine.
