New CYCLOPS junction to be built in Whalley Range

Work will begin on a new CYCLOPS junction in South Manchester next week. The busy Brooks Bar junction in Whalley Range, sees five lanes of traffic crossing and is a route into many areas south of the city.

The decision to build a CYCLOPS - which means Cycle Optimised Protected Signals - junction will make the crossing safer for both pedestrians and cyclists, helping them to move across the junction while separated from each other, and cars. The work will begin next week on August 22.

The design of this CYCLOPS junction will change road access in the area to aims and ease congestion. Shrewsbury Street will be closed at Upper Chorlton Road and turning left will be banned when turning left from Chorlton Road in Moss Lane West.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, executive member for environment and transport said: “CYCLOPS junctions have already made an incredible impact in Manchester as we work to make walking and cycling a more attractive prospect for our residents.

“By making it easier for people seeking more active ways of travelling we’re breaking down barriers for our residents and ultimately making our neighbourhoods safer.”

Work to the junction is expected to last until Spring of 2023.
