Nadine Menendez's Trial Postponed Due To Serious Health Issues

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez to make first remarks following indictment

Federal prosecutors have agreed to postpone the trial of Nadine Menendez after her lawyers cited serious health issues. The delay was granted to allow Menendez sufficient time to recover from a recently diagnosed medical condition.

Nadine Menendez, the wife of Senator Bob Menendez, requested the trial be postponed after being diagnosed with a serious medical condition that requires a surgical procedure in the next 4–6 weeks, followed by significant follow-up and recovery treatment. Her lawyers stated that she would not be physically or psychologically fit to participate in a six-week trial starting on May 6.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding the extent of Menendez's medical treatment, her lawyers have requested a hearing on June 4 to update the court on her condition and set a new trial date.

Last week, all four of Nadine's lawyers filed a motion to withdraw from her case, citing reasons explained in a sealed declaration. The charges against Senator Bob Menendez and his wife were unsealed in September 2023, alleging that he acted as a foreign agent of Egypt and engaged in a corruption scheme with several individuals.

The indictment accuses the Menendez couple of accepting bribes, including cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, and other valuables, to protect and enrich certain individuals. The indictment also mentions the purchase of a luxury car with the help of one of the alleged co-conspirators.

Senator Menendez was removed as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last fall. Both Menendez and his wife have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
