Mum let son, 12, do the Asda big shop and here's what he bought

A mum who let her 12-year-old son do the grocery shopping was taken aback to see what he came home with.

Kelly Miller Richards said her son, Vinnie, is a budding young chef. She set him the challenge of buying the ingredients for, and making, five evening meals for the family. He had a budget of £50 to spend at Asda, but came back with quite a bit of change.

Sharing Vinnie's success in a Facebook group for families trying to eat on a budget, Kelly, from County Durham, said: "So I gave my son Vinnie a challenge, I told him to do a shop and make five meals out of £50 for five of us... and he has pulled it off on only £36.14. (He gets to keep the change).

"He added fruit, water and milk in as well. He also cooked his first meal tonight was lovely.

"The meals are spag bol with crusty bread, chicken korma with rice, a cooked breakfast, crispy chicken wraps with salad and chips, and a spaghetti carbonara. He wants to be a chef when he's older, I am so proud of him twelve years old and doing this". [sic]

Kelly's post has been liked thousands of times, with hundreds of positive comments. One mum said: "I love this idea, I think I might challenge my 14-year-old to do this".

Another said: "Please could I borrow him! He's better than my husband!", and a third said: "Can I just say this is absolutely brilliant I did similar with my son who wanted to be a chef! His 23 now and did make it as a pro chef".
