Michael Owen expecting epic final day after Leeds United endure 'horrific' sequence

Former England striker Michael Owen is expecting an epic finish to the Premier League relegation battle after seeing Leeds United endure a 'horrific' day on Monday that saw the Whites drop into the bottom three.

With Sam Allardyce unable to kick off his firefighting Whites rescue mission with an upset at treble-chasing Manchester City on Saturday, Leeds had to spend the rest of the bank holiday weekend waiting for their relegation rivals to play. Everton and Nottingham Forest would seize their opportunity to move ahead of the Whites following wins over Brighton and Southampton respectively.

This meant Leeds have sunk to 19th in the table, with Leicester City joining them in the drop zone following the Foxes 5-3 defeat at Fulham, the pair now two points off Everton in 17th.

Ex-Liverpool and Newcastle striker Owen was quick to point out how damaging the latest set of results were for Leeds and Leicester and believes the way that the fixture list lies means that little will be decided until the final day of the campaign.

"Not a good day at all for Leeds or Leicester, horrific,” Owen told Premier League Productions. “I look at those fixtures and points on the board are so important. They aren’t going to be many points, I feel, won out of those sets of fixtures.

“There are a lot of tough run-ins now. Only three games to go – the next two games for all the teams. I can hardly see any points.

“But the last game, for all of them, are probably where the points will be. It could be an absolute grandstand finish.”

Leeds host Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season, while Everton are at home to Bournemouth, Leicester host West Ham and Nottingham Forest visit Crystal Palace.
