Matthew and Camila McConaughey's grounding cabinet color encourages us to return to natural surroundings

There are unlimited options when it comes to painting kitchen cabinets. There is of course, the classic all-white look, while some have been opting to go for a moodier scheme with darker greys or even blacks. One option we can't get enough of right now is a tried and true blue, a color that goes with absolutely any neutral.

Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila are on board with the trend, having recently posted a video in their shared kitchen, which features pale blue kitchen cabinetry to complement their built-in wooden shelving.

From the sky to the sea, blue's calming properties are rooted in its abundance within the natural world. For this reason, experts highly recommend exploring the versatile shade in the kitchen and beyond.

‘In a similar way to green, blue is a color I associate mostly with nature, and specifically summer,’ says interior designer Matthew Williamson. 'It’s got that feel-good factor, and its possibilities are endless. It’s an expansive color we see in nature each and every day, so, as a familiar tone to our eye, it’s no wonder we are naturally drawn to it. It’s easy and polite, without being boring, and a harmonious color to live with.'

Blue hues range wildly in their ambiance, so Matthew suggests choosing one that appeals to one's existing stylistic sensibilities.

'From French blue to cornflower, you can tread very gently and dip your toe in the water, through to azure and aqua for actual watery shades with a more vibrant thread,' Matthew explains. 'I love all these tones but none more so than the deepest indigo blues and sapphires through to Klein Blue and electric blue for a brilliantly bold statement.'

Above all, Matthew encourages us to return to our natural surroundings when searching for the perfect shade to incorporate into the home.

'When creating a blue-based color palette for an interior refresh, you might not need to look very far for inspiration. Take a blue – any blue, for that matter – and the chances are you might just have the perfect shades right under your nose,' he says.
