Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gives verdict on Mason Mount performance vs Leeds

Erik ten Hag was effusive about Mason Mount's first performance for Manchester United.

Mount started in the 2-0 friendly win over Leeds in Oslo and played 45 minutes before he made way at half-time with the rest of the starters.

The 24-year-old was involved in a number of United's attacks, took ownership of United's set-pieces and went close with an audacious chip in the 11th minute.

"Ah, great," Ten Hag replied when asked about Mount's performance on MUTV. "First time but we could expect this [level of performance].

"I think for him it's just his first because he has so much skills and I'm sure we will take so much joy from him and he will contribute to our performance, absolutely.

"We need players who net [free-kicks]."

The United players who were on international duty in June will return for pre-season on Saturday and are unlikely to be involved in the friendly against Lyon in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

United fly from Edinburgh to the United States and play three friendlies against Arsenal, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Ten Hag is mindful of easing players back into a competitive environment after United suffered a number of high-profile injuries last season.

"Those players, most of them won't show up in Edinburgh as well," Ten Hag clarified. "They need a good training week, they had their days off, relaxation, those players played the most games last season, they needed that rest.

"But we have to bring them back and be careful. You can't go from zero to 100. So one of the things at the end of last season, we didn't always have our best starting XI, so that's what you want to achieve here."
