Kirby Smart updates Brock Bowers’ ankle surgery recovery

Georgia Bulldogs junior tight end Brock Bowers underwent TightRope surgery on his ankle after he suffered a high ankle sprain against Vanderbilt on Oct. 14.

Bowers, who is projected to a be a top pick in the 2024 NFL draft, is working hard to return to full strength following his ankle surgery. Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart updated Bowers’ status ahead of Georgia’s Week 11 SEC game against Ole Miss.

He’s working hard. He’s doing all he can in terms of trying to get himself in shape and get better. I mean, he’s back running now on dry land and we’re hoping that he keeps getting better. That’s this kind of the MO on this injury, you know, every kid we’ve had so far that’s had it: Week 1 they do this; Week 2 they do this; Week 3 they do that. He’s right on schedule for the things he’s been doing.

It sounds like Bowers is making good progress in his recovery. Bowers still has other milestones to hit before he will be allowed to return to game action.

Georgia tight end Oscar Delp has done a solid job of replacing Bowers. Delp has five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown in his two starts with Bowers out of the lineup.

Bowers remains Georgia’s leading receiver through 10 weeks of the season. Bowers has 41 receptions for 567 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Smart provided an additional update on Bowers on the SEC’s weekly teleconference.

I think there’s a lot of markers he’s got to hit. There’s more than just the marker of pure speed. When your deacceleration numbers and your acceleration numbers are closer to what your norm is, then you feel much more comfortable with it.

Smart is impressed with Bowers’ work ethic.

I’ve never seen a person who has worked as hard as he’s worked.

Bowers has not been ruled out for the Ole Miss game, but he is unlikely to play a large role against the Rebels.
