Jordan's King Abdullah II stressed on Sunday the need for Israel to respect the historical and legal status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

It must cease all illegal and provocative measures that violate it and could lead to more escalation, reported the kingdom's state news agency (Petra).

Chairing a meeting to tackle the latest developments in Jerusalem, King Abdullah called on the government to continue its regional and international efforts and communications to stop the Israeli escalation, and to lobby for an effective international stance that pressures Tel Aviv.

He said maintaining calm requires Israel to respect the sanctity of Al-Aqsa and to establish political conditions that fulfill all the just rights of the Palestinian people.

Protecting Jerusalem and its holy sites will remain a priority for Jordan, he declared.
