The World Boxing Council has taken action against unbeaten Jermall Charlo by stripping him of his middleweight title after his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in Texas. The decision was made by the organization's Board of Governors, who appointed Carlos Adames as the new champion in the division. Charlo had not defended his title since 2021, while Adames had already become the interim champion in October 2022.

Charlo, aged 33, was arrested by police in Pearland, Texas, on three misdemeanor charges on Monday night. The police report indicated that his blood-alcohol content was recorded at over 0.15, which is twice the legal limit, after he was involved in a collision with another vehicle and attempted to evade law enforcement.

In response to the situation, the WBC issued a statement expressing its commitment to supporting Jermall Charlo during his challenging times, particularly in terms of mental wellness. Following a comprehensive assessment of the circumstances, the WBC may consider ranking Charlo in the super middleweight category.

Charlo's most recent fight took place in November, where he secured a unanimous-decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. in a non-title bout. With an impressive record of 33 wins and no losses, including 22 knockouts, Charlo's career has been marked by success in the ring.
