Is Johnny Sexton retiring? His age, wife and huge salary

Johnny Sexton is set to bid farewell to the Six Nations in style on Saturday as attempts to end his final game in the championship as a Grand Slam-winning captain and the competition's all-time record points scorer.

The Ireland skipper will be playing in front of a home crowd as his side take on England and go in search of a clean sweep of wins and pick up what will be their third Six Nations Grand Slam.

The fly-half is set to retire from the game after the Rugby World Cup later this year, with this weekend's match set to mark his 113th appearance for his country. He is also primed to become the all-time record points scorer in the Six Nations, having tied with fellow countryman Ronan O'Gara during last weekend's win over Scotland.

It is sure to be a special day at the Aviva Stadium for Sexton and his family and the British and Irish Lion has said he will have to keep his emotions in check if he is to lead Ireland to a Grand Slam win, which he described as "the stuff of dreams".

“Once I start getting dragged into that, you start getting away from how you’re going to make it happen – process, performance and making sure that you’re nailed on,” he said ahead of the game. “I’m trying to get away from it as much as I can. I have got a bit more emotional the further I’ve gone on definitely, so I’ll be trying to hold that back but use it as well because hopefully it’ll be a special day.”

But while we all know about his achievements on the pitch, what is the Ireland captain like off it? Here's everything you need to know about the star, from his family life to his net worth.

How old is Johnny Sexton and where is he from?

The Ireland captain was born in Rathgar, Dublin on July 11 1985, making him 37 years old.

He also has family ties to North Kerry and West Clare.

His uncle, William Sexton was also a rugby player who starred for Garryowen, Munster and Ireland, while his brother Jeremiah is a lock for RFU Championship side Doncaster Knights, having also played for Exeter Chiefs and London Irish.

He attended St Mary's College, Dublin and went on to study at University College Dublin, where he completed a degree in Commerce.

How did he meet his wife and how long have they been married?

Johnny and his wife Laura, a teacher, met as teenagers and have been together ever since.

The pair, who are both from Dublin, got married in July 2013 in Adare, County Limerick, with family, friends and Sexton's teammates from Leinster and Ireland watching them tie the knot in a glamorous ceremony.

How many children do they have?

Johnny and Laura have three children together.

Luca, aged eight, was born in 2014, while six-year-old Amy arrived in 2016 before Sophie, four, was born in 2018.

Sophie's birth capped quite a week for the Ireland star as he was announced as Leinster captain just days earlier. Taking to Instagram to announce the arrival of his third child, he wrote: ""Thank you for all the messages! Hard to put into words the last few days.

"First of all, I am incredibly proud of my wife Laura and we are delighted to welcome baby Sophie into our family. Thankfully both Laura and Sophie are doing great and I look forward to getting them both home to Amy and Luca...."

He added: "When I didn’t think my week could get any better I was then asked to lead the team I grew up supporting, and dreaming to play for. This is a huge honour and I am immensely proud.

Where do they live?

The couple bought a house in plush Dublin suburb Rathmines in 2019, with Irish rugby great Brian O'Driscoll among their neighbours.

The cosy family home features a modern living room with a black gas fireplace and built-in flatscreen TV, while an open plan living space contains a stylish pine dining table and plenty of family photos on the wall.

Their private back garden also features a blooming flower bed and a concrete deck where he works out and uses his exercise bike.

What is his net worth?

While Sexton's net worth has not been confirmed, he reportedly earns around €650,000 per season on his current IRFU contract.

During the two years he spent in France with Racing 92 between 2013 and 2015, he was the second largest earner in the Pro14.

He also owns a management company, JAS Management and Promotions Ltd, which enjoyed a bumper year in 2022, with profits soaring by almost €350,000 to around €2.8 million.
