Ireland weather: Heavy rain and 'flooding' this week but expert reveals exact day it could get better

There will be more heavy rain as well as 'flooding' this week but a big change in the weather could be just around the corner.

Met Eireann has forecast a mix of showers with sunny spells on Wednesday and Thursday but it is expected to get very wet Friday.

The rain will extend across the country on Friday and be heavy at times, which may cause some flooding.

A Met Eireann forecaster warned: "Very unsettled for Friday and Saturday, with heavy rain or showers and strong winds at times. Showery on Sunday and into early next week."

However, it's not all bad news as an Irish weather expert shared a weather model showing the exact day things could start to improve.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather offered people a sliver of hope, as he wrote on Twitter: "First sign of hope on weather models? It’s a long way off but latest ECMWF shows a chance of high pressure returning from around the 21st. Long way off so very uncertain but if you needed some hope then here it is."

Here is Met Eireann's full forecast for the week:

Wednesday, July 12

Mainly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle this morning. Most areas will become drier with sunny spells for the afternoon and evening, however showers will continue in Ulster and northern parts of Connacht and Leinster, with a few heavy ones possible. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees in a light to moderate west to northwest wind.

Tonight there will be clear spells and well scattered showers, mainly in Ulster and Munster. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees in a light west to southwest or variable wind.

Thursday, July 13

Scattered showers will continue tomorrow. There will be some sunny spells at first but it will get cloudier later in the day. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in a light to moderate west to southwest wind.

Thursday night will start off partly cloudy with scattered showers. It will become cloudy and wet over Munster and south Leinster overnight as rain moves in from the south. Light to moderate south to southeast winds generally, but freshening in the south later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees.

Friday, July 14

Friday will be wet and breezy. Rain will extend northwards across the country during the morning and afternoon, followed by scattered showers. The rain will be heavy at times and may cause some flooding. Highest temperatures of 15 to 21 degrees, with moderate to fresh and gusty winds that will vary in direction through the day.

It will become drier and less breezy for a time on Friday night with just well scattered showers, however more rain will likely move into the west towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in a moderate southerly breeze.

Saturday, July 15

Saturday will be generally wet with heavy showers or longer spells of rain, but there will be some sunshine too during any showery periods. It will be breezy and blustery with a moderate to fresh and gusty wind, southerly at first and then becoming northwesterly. Winds will become strong at times, especially near coasts. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees.

Scattered heavy showers with some clear spells on Saturday night. Breezy at first with a moderate to fresh west to northwest wind, but winds easing overnight. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

Sunday, July 16

A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with a mostly moderate westerly wind.

Next week

It looks like the weather will stay quite unsettled into early next week, with temperatures a little below average for July.
