Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans declared legally divorced two years on from bitter split

Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans are now officially divorced, but custody negotiations regarding the former couple's children remain ongoing.

Their marriage was terminated on Monday, allowing both stars to be declared legally divorced.

The Welsh actor, 49, and Alice, 54, parted ways in January 2021 following 13 years of marriage, with the split quickly turning toxic and playing out on social media.

Fantastic Four star Ioan filed for divorce two months later and the pair have have been embattled in legal proceedings since - with with Ioan filing for a restraining order against his ex-wife in addition to their custody battle over their two children.

Alice and Ioan share two daughters; Ella, 12, and eight-year-old Elise.

Earlier this year, Ella filed a restraining order request against her father and his partner Bianca Wallace, which has since been denied.

According to court documents seen by the Daily Mail, Ioan filed for bifurcation and termination of marital status on May 18, with Judge Josh Freeman Stinn granting the dad-of-two's request for divorce in LA Superior Court on Monday [July 3].

A minute order obtained by the publication shows the judge approving the request, ruling: "The Court finds irreconcilable differences have arisen in the marriage and grants judgment for the dissolution of marriage as to status only, effective today."

While Alice and Ioan may no longer be legally married, the former couple's legal battle continues.

Ioan, who is now in an relationship with Australian actress Bianca Wallace, expressed concern for his two daughters last month, successfully obtained a three-year restraining order against his ex-wife in August 2022.

Following his daughter Ella's unsuccessful bid for a restraining order against him last month, Ioan accused ex Alice of inflicting "serious emotional harm" on their two young children.

The King Arthur actor claimed Alice "has verbally abused and undermined me in front of the girls throughout their lives" and alleged his ex "has been encouraging their children not to communicate with him."

In his declaration related to Ella's restraining order request, dated June 23, 2023, Ioan stated to Los Angeles Superior Court that he believes his ex Alice was the one who encouraged their daughter Ella, 13, to file the request.

He wrote: "Since I moved out of the family residence in January 2021, Alice has inflicted serious emotional harm on Ella and Elsie by her statements and by interfering in my relationship with them.

"Alice has verbally abused and undermined me in front of the girls throughout their lives. Since 13 January 2021, Alice has also encouraged and instructed them not to see me or communicate with me, and she has made hundreds if not thousands of threatening and abusive communications to me and about me, many of which I submitted to the Court as part of my request for a Domestic Violence Restraining Order."

Ella submitted a restraining order request against her father and his girlfriend, who she accuses of "slamming a door on her", on May 31 but the request has since been denied.

Writing in his Declaration, Gruffudd claimed: "I believe Alice has used and harmed Ella, and is the person behind Ella's actions and Request. I have read Ella's Declaration. I believe Alice wrote it.

"I believe Alice's actions are child abuse, and I am gravely concerned for our children. Ella has not attended school for the 2022/2023 school year. Alice has kept her isolated at home. Alice has claimed Ella is being 'home schooled' yet has provided no information."

Following Ella's restraining order request being denied, Alice took to Instagram to share a picture of her two daughters and reacted to the claims made by her former spouse.

The Vampire Diaries actress wrote in the lengthy Instagram post: "These are my beautiful kids. Yesterday was a very traumatic day for all of us but we got through it because of the love we have for each other. Just look at these two. Look how much they care.

"I won’t say more about the unbelievable injustices of the CA court system that we all experienced, but know that my babies are happy. They’re well fed and we’ve laughed a lot since and we all slept in my bed last night for the first time in about 7 years! Heaven! ( I’ll show the pic if I can get permission from Ella!)

"We are so grateful for your love and support. There is so much I am not allowed to say. But it will be so much more interesting when I finally AM allowed because let me tell you, the last three years of our lives have been like nothing I’ve ever heard or possibly could have imagined. Love you all A, E, E &E (fur)".

Alice and Ioan met on the set of 102 Dalmatians in 199 and tied the knot in 2007.

In January 2021, Alice announced Ioan had left their family home in Los Angeles.

Writing on Twitter at the time of the split, the mum-of-two told her followers: "'Sad news. My beloved husband/soulmate of 20 years, Ioan Gruffudd, has announced he is to leave his family, starting next week.

"Me and our young daughters girls are very confused and sad. We haven't been given a reason except that he "no longer loves me." I'm so sorry."
