Inquiry launched into Adelaide casino

South Australia's gambling regulator has launched an investigation into Adelaide Casino. (AAP)

An independent investigation has been launched into the operations of the Adelaide Casino, after similar inquiries interstate revealing "significant failings".

South Australia's Liquor and Gambling regulator has asked former Supreme Court judge Brian Martin to look into the operations of the SkyCity Casino.

It comes after similar inquires in NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, and as a further inquiry is about to begin in Queensland.

"Inquiries to date have highlighted significant failings on the part of Crown Resorts as operators of Crown Casinos," SA Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Dini Soulio said.

"In addition, Star Entertainment Group is the subject of a current inquiry in NSW where significant failings have been identified.

"A number of the matters raised to date extend beyond any one organisation and point instead to broader systemic issues within the casino industry."

Mr Soulio said the SA investigation would ensure SkyCity was still suitable to hold a casino licence.

Mr Martin is due to report back to the commissioner by February next year.

SA-BEST upper house MP Connie Bonaros welcomed the investigation, but said nothing short of a royal commission would do.

"SA-BEST has been fiercely outspoken about the operations of the casino for years, including calling for a royal commission into its operations last year," she said.

"Every South Australian should be deeply concerned by the reasons given for the independent investigation and Mr Soulio's concerns."
