Heisman Trophy Winner Caleb Williams Declares for NFL Draft

FILE - Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams warms up for the team's NCAA college football game against UCLA, Nov. 18, 2023, in Los Angeles. USC will play its final game as a member of the Pa

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams has officially announced his entry into the NFL draft, marking the end of his two prolific seasons at Southern California. The announcement was made on social media on the final day for underclassmen to declare for the draft.

Considered by many as the favorite to be the No. 1 selection in the draft, Williams is generating significant excitement and anticipation. The Chicago Bears currently hold the top pick and could potentially add the highly sought-after quarterback to their roster.

In his Instagram post, Williams expressed his eagerness to continue learning and doing whatever it takes to succeed at the next level. Reflecting on his journey, he shared his determination to make his childhood dreams a reality and to strive for greatness in the years to come.

During his collegiate career at both Oklahoma and USC, Williams amassed impressive statistics, throwing for 10,082 yards with 93 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Following his move from Oklahoma to USC with coach Lincoln Riley, Williams became the eighth Heisman Trophy winner for the Trojans in 2022. Even though USC struggled with an 8-5 season, Williams shined with another outstanding performance, solidifying his status as a top quarterback prospect.

Known for his strong arm, elusive maneuvers, and exceptional playmaking abilities, Williams led the Trojans to a remarkable one-year improvement and a berth in the Cotton Bowl during his Heisman-winning season. Despite a challenging season this year, Williams showcased his remarkable talent and emerged as the most desired quarterback in the nation.

Beyond his passing prowess, Williams has proven to be a threat on the ground as well, rushing for 21 touchdowns over the past two seasons at USC. Despite his dual-threat abilities, Williams does not categorize himself as a running quarterback, highlighting his focus on being a well-rounded player.

While the Bears have the first opportunity to secure Williams as the cornerstone of their roster, they have relied on Justin Fields as their starting quarterback for most of the past three seasons. The Washington Commanders, based in Williams' hometown, hold the second pick in the draft, followed by the rebuilding New England Patriots.

Although Williams' decision to enter the draft was not surprising, it still marks a significant moment for USC, who had long anticipated his departure. The Trojans had backup quarterback Miller Moss step in during the Holiday Bowl, where he made an impression by throwing a bowl-record six touchdown passes. Moss has emerged as a strong contender to replace Williams as the team's starting quarterback in the upcoming season.

With plenty of talent and potential, Caleb Williams now embarks on his NFL journey. As the draft approaches, the anticipation grows as fans and teams wonder who will have the privilege of adding this exceptional quarterback to their roster.
